Membership Information

Skylands Gallery & Studio is a partnership of professional visual artists who cooperatively administer, staff and exhibit in our Wantage, NJ location. Our members have a firm commitment to the arts and growing the awareness of their own art and the artist community within the Skylands Region of New Jersey.

Skylands Gallery & Studio is committed to returning 100% of the proceeds from the sale of art to the respective artist. Artist Gallery Members select which of their pieces they would like to display and set the pricing for those works. No sales are split with the gallery. The gallery functions financially solely from the artist member fee. This fee goes towards the lease of the space, utilities and marketing.

Every artist Gallery Member is allocated 80 - 100 square feet of gallery wall space to display their art in the 1,400 square foot Main Gallery Room. The gallery annex room also offers ample space for entertaining patrons during the opening show evening.

Membership is open to painters, photographers and sculptors. All mixed media are acceptable. Besides selling your own originals you can sell signed prints of your work as well. If you are a sculptor there are certain size limitations, listed below. As a sculptor you will also be required to provide shelving and its installation for your artwork. Any shelving will need to be approved by the director of the gallery.

We also have private studio space available for artists, this includes painters, sculptors, photographers, graphic artists, architects, designers, web-page designers, art instructors, crafters, game developers, and other creative professions. While there are no membership requirements for Studio Members, there will be networking opportunities available between Studio Members. When you have 20+ creative people working in the same space, of course, interesting ideas and possible collaborations may come about. Besides having physical private studio space you will also be included in all marketing materials and be listed as a Studio Member. You do have the option of either becoming a Gallery Member, Studio Member, or both.

To Apply for Gallery Admission:

Submissions are accepted Saturday 1-7pm and Sunday 12-4pm or by appointment. Please call or email us first to let us know you intend on submitting. You will be contacted via email or phone with the results. As storage space is limited we ask that you pick-up your artwork during gallery hours within a week of a decision.

Application to the gallery implies that you are ready to exhibit work in a professional environment and agree to the member obligations (listed below). The gallery may have a waiting list, though openings may be filled on a "best-fit" rather than a "first-come" basis.

Once you are accepted you will be required to sign the Artist Membership Agreement for final entrance to the gallery.

Applications Requirements:
  • Two to five pieces of original artwork. Wall art may be no larger than 48" x 48" and sculpture no taller than 18" or 12" in depth.
  • Up to 20 photos of your artwork.
  • An artists bio/resume/CV, please include any other non-art related professional and non-professional experience. The more information you provide about yourself, the better.
  • Please fill out a copy of our New Artist Member Application to submit along with your portfolio.

Member Benefits:
  • Year-round exhibition space in a AAA retail center along highly traveled Route 23
  • 24-7 access to the gallery to meet current and prospective collectors.
  • 10' of wall space dedicated solely to your artwork in the 1,400 square foot Main Gallery Room
  • No commission taken on the sales of your work
  • Opportunity to display and sell original and print works plus related items
  • Year-round promotional activities
  • Access to gallery mail, gallery email and patron email lists
  • Inclusion in high-traffic gallery website, news blog and online activities
  • Gallery handles payment of sales tax and processing of credit card sales (a 2.5% fee will be deducted from all sales to cover credit card fees and cash handling)
  • Opportunity to learn from and network with other professional artists
  • No contract restricting sales or exhibition outside of Skylands Gallery
  • Freedom to display the artwork you want and price it as you see fit

Obligations of Membership:
  • Pay monthly gallery fee in full, on time
  • Attend monthly Monday evening meetings at the gallery and relocate your artwork each month after the completion of the two-person featured artist show.
  • Work with your featured artist partner (if doing a dual show) on publicity and reception. The gallery will provide some advertising for your show, however it is primarily up to you.
  • Serve on a working committee (house upkeep, PR etc…)
  • Attend as many gallery openings as possible to support your fellow artists and help out with occasional other gallery events
