Maureen Strelzik - Metal Artist from Newton, NJ

Maureen's love of color, texture, and design began during adolescence in Cleveland, Ohio when she designed and constructed her clothing and household furnishings. It continued in college where she studied costume design for the performing arts.
Maureen's interest in color and texture evolved from fabric design to weaving. Her work included wall hangings, clothing and textiles for the home. Intrigued by the potential of texture in metal, as well as the hues and color tones made by forging metal, Maureen learned the basics of blacksmithing and metalsmithing. She has studied at Peters Valley, 92nd Street Y, School of Visual Arts, and The Center for Metal Arts, in addition to her own reading and experimentation.
Having retired from her career as a Psychotherapist, Maureen is now able to devote more time to her craft. She is presently integrating weaving patterns and textures into her work with copper and other non ferrous metals. Her extensive travels and study of the art of third world cultures often provides creative inspiration for her work.
Prior to joining Skylands Gallery, Maureen's work has been commissioned for private collections. She can be reached at maureenstrelzik@gmail.com.
