As a local artist, current member and 30 year resident of Sussex County I am honored and proud to represent Skylands Gallery & Studios as Director. What we do here helps to reflect our dedication to our artists and community at the same time. We aim to create an accessible and engaging gallery space approaching contemporary art in a profoundly personal way.

As a collective gallery we welcome and encourage a wide range of diversity and talent through metals, fibers, photography, wood, pottery, abstract and representational painting and drawing, mixed media, contemporary folk-art and small 3D work. We have a full scale of artist members from “emerging” to highly refined professionals and we are seeking to foster the growth of our membership and our visibility in Northern New Jersey as a gallery of distinction.

As a group we continue our efforts to “give back” to our community by supporting regional non-profit organizations on a per-exhibit basis. Each exhibit has a selected charity that receives 10% of the reception sales from each show.

In an effort to broaden our community interaction and presence, I would like to introduce the gallery annex area as a venue for conversation and collaboration in exploring our commonalities of struggle and achievement. Use of this space for small gatherings will be to inspire engaged awareness and creative problem solving of specific topics as well as entertainment.  Providing short films, Q&A sessions, demonstrations and presentations, we can offer this space to promote exciting events where attendees can experience art making techniques first-hand and/or expand their knowledge on issues pertaining to our region. This space may also be used for small group meetings, celebrations and private ventures.

Our artist studios are spacious; with several sizes available, well lit and offer a common area with microwave, coffee station and small refrigerator, a slop sink area, a studio bathroom and secure private entrance. These amenities are well suited for “artist’s hours”, most types of work and are the perfect incubation space for that late night vision. Share the creative energy or close your studio door to maintain personal privacy. These studios may also be used as private teaching spaces if you are involved in giving lessons or workshops.

Phylis obtained her BFA from William Paterson University, is a “multi” media artist living in Vernon, NJ. She has a studio at Skylands where she creates and offers lessons and workshops.
